Orphaned and Abandoned Children with AIDS / HIV

As the number of orphans escalates around the world, there is an increasing demand for sensory stimulation, nurturing touch and palliative care within orphanages and childcare settings. It is the vision of the Liddle Kidz Foundation Global to make a true difference for children who have been orphaned, along with their caregivers who lack the necessary support to provide them with best developmental care possible.

As the most publicized infectious disease in the western world, there is substantial fear among alternative healthcare practitioners about being in close contact with an infected individual.  The stigma surrounding AIDS can impart many negative effects on the mind and body.

In 2005, according to UNAIDS (The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS), it was estimated that there were 2.3 million children around the world living with HIV/AIDS. This number represented about 6% of the total world population living with HIV. In 2005, about 90% of children living with HIV lived in sub-Saharan Africa.

About 90% of HIV cases in children are due to "vertical" transmission – transmission from mother to child. Most of these cases of transmission happen during the last trimester of pregnancy, during delivery, or through breastfeeding.

In infants and children, signs and symptoms of HIV infection include:

  • Failure to gain weight or grow according to standardized growth curves. This is also known as "failure to thrive."

  • Failure to reach developmental milestones within a typical timeframe.

  • Neurologic problems – difficulty with walking, trouble in school, seizures.

  • Abnormally frequent childhood infections like ear infections, upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, gastroenteritis etc.

Liddle Kidz Foundation Global uses pediatric massage to decrease muscle spasms, cramps, body tension, improve sleep patterns, improve healthy weight gain, reduce anxiety, increase white blood cell counts, decrease levels of Cortisol and activate natural killer cells.

Liddle Kidz Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that uses the power of touch to reach the world’s most vulnerable children with experiences of appropriate nurturing touch that they often lack.   We collaborate with caregivers and healthcare professionals to raise awareness of the practice and benefits of nurturing touch for children.
